Aftercare is part of the service. A good installation can still mat, shed or become difficult to maintain if the system is handled aggressively between appointments.
Shampoo: pat, do not scrub
Use a hydrating shampoo and work with your fingertips gently. Do not scratch or aggressively scrub the mesh, lace or closure. Shampoo can be patted through the natural hair and down through the lengths.
Condition the hair, not the closure knots
Conditioning helps keep the hair from tangling and matting, but conditioner should not be pushed into the hand-tied knots of a closure. Smooth it through the hair and rinse it thoroughly.
Brush gently and regularly
Use a brush that moves through the hair without yanking the foundation. Brush all the way through the lengths and support the hair while you work near the base. Regular brushing helps prevent tangles from turning into matting.
Protect it at night
A low ponytail or, preferably, a low braid helps keep the hair controlled while you sleep. A silk bonnet and silk pillowcase can reduce friction.
Do not skip maintenance
Your natural hair keeps growing under the system. When maintenance is delayed, matting, breakage and excess stress on the natural hair become more likely. If something hurts, lifts or feels wrong, contact me instead of waiting for the next appointment.
